Rail EMC

On July 2007, the previous Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) Directive 89/336/EEC was repealed by Directive 2004/108/EC. The basic principles of the original Directive have not been altered, but there are significant changes which may affect the rail industry.

As the two year transition date has passed all equipment declarations of conformity require reissuing to declare compliance to the new Directive. In some cases, new EMC Technical Documentation and additional testing will be requirement to meet current EMC Harmonized Standards.

Many large infrastructure projects now fall within the scope of a 'fixed installation'. There is now only one route to compliance for 'apparatus' which also includes Rolling Stock, so an understanding of the formal requirements of the new legislation is an important factor in ensuring safety in the Rail network.
