Railway RAMS & System Engineering

TÜV SÜD Rail provides a complete client service in Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety (RAMS) Management and Systems Engineering for railway engineering projects. We have a depth of understanding that permits the level of RAMS Management and Systems Engineering activities to be planned correctly with the right depth of approach, commensurate with the project risks. We endeavor to embed this know-how within the client organization.

Our approach means that there is no wasted effort and you will actually add value and make the project objectives, including acceptance and demonstration of performance, more easily achievable. By involving TÜV SÜD Rail early in the project, especially at the planning stage, there will be comprehensive support that will integrate RAMS Management and Systems Engineering into the full lifecycle i.e. from requirements derivation through design, installation, testing, commissioning, operation and decommissioning.

Our approach is to provide Progressive Assurance throughout the project. Final acceptance should mainly entail providing the evidence defined in the assurance plan as the justification that the system is fit for its intended purpose and, most importantly, safe.

By combining the best practice from China, Germany, UK and elsewhere, we can provide the best solutions available. We can solve problems efficiently by drawing on our in-house wealth of expertise in most project lifecycle areas.

We have hands-on experience of the latest RAMS Management and Systems Engineering approaches that are necessary to the efficient fulfillment of complex projects. We are experts in the latest RAMS techniques such as FMEA, Fault Trees, Reliability Block Diagrams, SIL Allocation, HAZOP, Markov Analysis, Simulation etc. which we are able to apply appropriately and in a timely manner as laid out in the CENELEC standards and the Yellow Book 4 Guidance.

Our Systems Engineering capabilities ensure that requirements are managed effectively, systems integrated and managed, and the configuration of the system is tracked. We use the latest techniques for requirements management and demonstration as in, for example, the IEC Systems Engineering Standards using the latest software and methods.

Your benefits

  • Communication within the project avoiding a disjoint between design and RAMS /Systems Engineering.
  • Correct planning so that RAMS is given enough resources and therefore not ‘back fitted’ at the end to enable the acceptance hurdle to be met.
  • Adoption of a holistic approach to systems integration and not a 'Silo Mentality' i.e. not considering wider interactions.
  • Clarity about whether the traditional risk acceptance methods (e.g. ALARP, GAMÉ, MEM) are being met either qualitatively or by quantification.
  • Clarity regarding the development and demonstration of safety and performance targets.
  • A full understanding in the project disciplines regarding duties under Health and Safety Legislation.
  • An understanding of Engineering Safety and Health & Safety and the demarcation and overlap, especially under the new Construction (Design and Management) (CDM) and Railways and Other Guided Transport Systems (ROGs) regulations.
  • A concise and clear Engineering Safety Management system without unwieldy hazard logs, wasted meetings and effort caused by a lack of planning and process definition.
  • Single source for all your NoBo requirements
Sourcing all your NoBo requirements from a single supplier saves you time and money and eliminates duplication of testing and assessment.
